Electric Superbike Twente

Electric Superbike Twente has been an explorer of electric motorcycle racing since 2017. Our pursuit for speed was partially obstructed by the COVID-19 restrictions over the past two years. This resulted in two unfinished motorcycles with huge potentials. It is up to us, the fifth team, to extract this potential on the race track. With the knowledge gained in the previous years, during tests and on the race track, we have now set our sights on our race in Finland which starts on the 1st of July. ...

Power electronics key in renewables

Wind power seems easy. Put a turbine at sea, lay a cable to land and connect it to the grid. But without power electronics the energy transition would lose steam quickly. Finding smart brains that know how to put it all together to the most optimum setting are hard to find. Like for Shell, which is building offshore wind farms to make green hydrogen to help industries and heavy-duty transport to become sustainable. ...

Junction: A chat with Chris Zeinstra

We interviewed Chris Zeinstra, assistant professor of the Data Management and Biometrics group (DMB). Most bachelor’s students know Chris from his second-year courses, Continuous Linear Systems and Digital Signal Processing, but there are plenty of other courses he’s working on, in addition to various research topics such as forensic biometrics and embedded artificial intelligence. Throughout the interview, we asked Chris all kinds of questions, from his role in education and opinion on the current curriculum, all the way to what kind of a student he was, and what makes a perfect student in his eyes. ...

Where To Find €1.1 Billion?

Why do we see an increase in the student population? Who cares about the nominal study time? Who are the active students at Scintilla? Though these questions seem to be completely unrelated, the common denominator is – like almost everywhere in the world – money. Understanding where the money comes from and goes to is key in understanding the strategy, policy, and politics of universities. In this article I’ll elaborate on the question how universities are funded, what type of allocation is used, and various phenomena that result from that method of allocation. ...

Multi-Frequency Electrical Impedance Myography as an alternative to Electro-Myography

Imagine that one way or another you lose your hand. Various daily tasks which used to be an easy job might now be difficult to perform. Luckily in the 21st century it is possible to use a robotic prosthetic hand. At this moment multiple robotic prosthetic hands are already produced and used [1]. Most of these prosthetic hands make use of Electro-Myography (EMG) in combination with pre-configured hand positions [1]. However, the use of pre-configured hand positions makes it impossible for the prosthetic hand to make every move a human hand can make. ...

A new challenge for Green Team Twente

For just over ten years Green Team Twente has been competing in the Shell Eco Marathon, a competition all about efficiency. This experience resulted in the team becoming World Champions in 2019, due to the pandemic this was the last year in which the race was held. This year we are making a change: We will participate one last time in the Shell Eco Marathon while making the shift to Formula Student, a competition more aimed at speed. ...
